Kanu’s Freedom Is More Important Than Nigeria’s 2027 Polls, OYC Tells Trump
The National President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), Igboayaka O Igboayaka, has advised the United States government to exert pressure on its Nigerian counterpart to release the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Igboayaka asserted that securing Kanu’s release is a more commendable action than the Trump administration’s decision to monitor Nigeria’s general elections scheduled for 2027.
U.S. Congress member Riley Moore previously announced that the U.S. government will closely observe the upcoming elections in Nigeria.
In a statement in Abuja on Monday, Igboayaka emphasized that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the resolution of insurgency in Nigeria are of greater significance than election monitoring.
He criticized Riley Moore, expressing that Nigerians are fatigued by rhetoric devoid of tangible actions.
He noted that the ongoing violence within Nigeria raises questions about the country’s viability as a united entity.
Igboayaka further contended that the survival of Christians in Nigeria will not be secured through international or diplomatic assistance, but rather through the initiatives of Indigenous Nigerians who advocate for their self-preservation, self-defense, and self-determination.
He remarked, “Riley Moore’s statement regarding close election monitoring in 2027 reflects a misallocation of priorities; while Nigerians suffer from severe crises, the Trump administration appears to be preoccupied with less critical matters. The U.S. government should prioritize the protection of lives and properties of Christians in Nigeria over the monitoring of the 2027 elections.”
Igboayaka asserted, “It is evident, based on empirical evidence, that Nigeria is a failed state—irreparable and irreconcilable. A referendum or plebiscite represents the only feasible means for Nigerians to secure their survival.”
He concluded by urging the Trump administration to adopt a more pragmatic approach to addressing Nigeria’s enduring challenges by formulating a viable plan for a referendum or plebiscite in Nigeria.
