Court Acquits Man Accused Of Violating Minors
An Imo State High Court in Owerri, on Tuesday, discharged and acquitted Mr. Clement Odeku of a two-count charge related to sexual abuse and the indecent treatment of girls under the age of thirteen.
The presiding judge, Justice L. C. Azuama, determined that the prosecution did not establish its case beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the discharge and acquittal of Mr. Odeku.
The judgment was rendered following the conclusion of final addresses by counsel.
In response to the verdict, the defendant’s counsel, Dr. Ekezie Onumajulu, expressed satisfaction with the acquittal of his client.
Dr. Onumajulu disclosed that he defended the accused pro bono due to his indigent circumstances and an appeal from a contact who suggested that the accused was being unjustly targeted over a land dispute.
Dr. Onumajulu, who serves as the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Owerri Branch, advocated for the establishment of a more structured and sustainable framework for pro bono legal services, ensuring that access to justice is not contingent upon financial means.
