Tinubu Should Not Sign New Electoral Act
Former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to refrain from endorsing the new Electoral Act recently passed by the National Assembly.
During an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Igini expressed concerns regarding the new Electoral Act, characterizing it as a potential source of disorder that could endanger presiding officers.
He emphasized that provisions for reintroducing the incident form in the absence of network connectivity could lead to security risks for these officers.
Igini highlighted the possibility of unscrupulous politicians collaborating with telephone network operators to create network disruptions, thereby facilitating the manipulation of election results.
He cited an instance where a particular state orchestrated the absence of telecommunication services during its election.
Furthermore, Igini criticized both politicians and the judiciary for the prevalence of electoral misconduct within the country.
He argued that no court should possess the authority to declare any electoral outcomes.
Instead, he suggested that if the court identifies electoral irregularities, it should instruct INEC to address the issue by either conducting a new election or recalculating the figures.
