Striking IMSU Lecturers Say They Will Not Grade Student Exam Scripts

Striking lecturers at Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri have declared their refusal to evaluate or grade examination scripts of students who participate in assessments conducted during their ongoing strike.

Stephen Oguji, the Chairperson of the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), articulated this position in a statement released to National Newsbreak on Tuesday.

Oguji informed students currently undertaking examinations that the union is committed to ensuring that they do not graduate through a process that lacks integrity.

“We unequivocally condemn and reject the administration of examinations amidst an ongoing ASUU strike. The lecturers responsible for your instruction, assessment, and grading are currently on strike. We did not design these examinations, we are not overseeing them, and we will not evaluate or grade scripts from examinations conducted in our absence.

“We do not wish for you to jeopardize your examinations. We do not want you to lose your academic session. Most importantly, we do not want you to graduate through a process whose credibility may later be questioned.”

He emphasized that the true adversaries of the students are not their lecturers, but rather those in positions of authority capable of resolving the issues that led to the ASUU strike.

The chairperson urged students to unite with the union in advocating for the state government to implement the federal government-ASUU 2025 agreement regarding university funding.

“Dear students, your true adversary is not your lecturers. We are advocating for an educational system that functions effectively—for you, for us, and for future generations.

“Therefore, instead of opposing your lecturers, join forces with us. Engage with those who possess the authority to resolve this crisis. Urge the government to implement the Agreement and bring an end to the strike.

“We aspire to return to our classrooms. We want you back in our classrooms. We desire your examinations to be conducted appropriately. We want you to graduate with pride and legitimacy.

“Assist us in ending this strike. Your future is worth fighting for. Our struggle is also for you.”

The ASUU initiated a total and indefinite strike last August in response to the state government’s and university management’s failure to implement an agreement regarding improved working conditions for union members.

The union detailed numerous attempts to engage both the government and management, including issuing a 21-day ultimatum for the implementation of the agreement, all of which were unsuccessful.
