Owerri City Roads: A Call For Improved Sanitation

The roads in Owerri City are currently in a state of disarray, characterized by the presence of discarded sachets of pure water, sand, and metallic containers carelessly strewn by pedestrians and residents.
The cleanliness of the road surfaces is severely compromised due to a lack of sanitation awareness among users, coupled with the government’s insufficient maintenance efforts.
The deterioration of sanitation practices among the populace and the absence of a maintenance culture by the government are primary contributors to the poor condition of Owerri City roads.
It is imperative for the National Orientation Agency and the War Against Indiscipline and Corruption (WAI-C) to engage in educational initiatives aimed at promoting proper refuse disposal methods, discouraging littering on roads and in drainage systems. Furthermore, these agencies should ensure that road sweepers are regularly deployed to maintain the cleanliness of the roads, thereby enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Imo State.
Maintaining clean roads is essential, as they serve as the initial point of contact for tourists and visitors. A well-maintained roadway fosters a positive impression of the area, making it more inviting to travelers.
Currently, the roads in Owerri City remain untidy, and it is crucial for road sweepers to fulfill their responsibilities diligently. The government should actively oversee the activities of these road maintenance personnel.
Key thoroughfares such as Maria Assumpta Avenue, Item Street, Okigwe Road, Wetheral Road, Egbu Road, among others, require immediate and ongoing attention to ensure they are kept clean and free from waste. The time to act for a cleaner Owerri is now.
