Detained Aides Of Anyanwu-Akeredolu Regain Freedom
The three aides of Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the former First Lady of Ondo State, were on Monday released from detention.
The Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU), previously known as Tiger Base of the Imo State Police Command, released the aides following the intervention of Mr. Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, and Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State.
Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu expressed her profound gratitude to both the Inspector-General of Police and the Governor of Abia State, noting that their involvement ensured her aides did not endure an extended period in the confines of the police facility.
The three aides—Chibuzo Anyanwu, Eucharia Nwamara, also referred to as Chim-Chim, and Nonye Okafor—were apprehended by the police while representing Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu at a widows’ ceremony held at Obiri Umu Njoku’s residence in Umuoma Nekede, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, on Saturday.
The police alleged that they initiated a campaign for their principal, who is the Labour Party’s candidate for the House of Representatives in the Owerri Federal Constituency of Imo State.
Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu, who holds the esteemed traditional title of Ada Owere 1, contends that her aides were arrested and detained without just cause.
The late former governor of Ondo State, Aketi Rotimi Akeredolu’s wife, leads the Widows Alert Nigeria program, an initiative of the Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu Foundation (BAAF).
The Umuoma Nekede widows expressed interest in participating in the project and organized a meeting, inviting Ada Owere 1 as the special guest of honor.
The Labour Party candidate stated that her invitation to the meeting by the widows absolved her of any wrongdoing concerning the electoral commission’s directive on electioneering and corroborated her aides’ account.
The former First Lady affirmed her unwavering commitment to providing the people of Owerri Federal Constituency with purposeful, compassionate, and accountable representation.
