Africans Sit On Gold Yet Poor, Says Ondo Ex-First Lady

Former First Lady of Ondo State, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has expressed her concern regarding the widespread poverty in Africa despite the continent’s abundant natural resources.

Dr. Akeredolu, speaking on New Year’s Day at her hometown of Emeabiam Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, lamented that numerous African countries and communities possess substantial wealth yet continue to endure severe poverty.

The former First Lady who is spending her yuletide holiday at Emeabiam highlighted the neglect of the over 2,000 hectares of rubber estate and the sole river in the community..

Dr. Akeredolu expressed her hope that the government would capitalize on the potential of the rubber estate and empower the local inhabitants to effectively utilize the fish resources available in the community’s sole river.

She remarked that the tranquil environment and lush greenery of Emeabiam Community compel her to return periodically to spend time with her family.

Dr. Akeredolu, who holds the esteemed chieftaincy title of Ada Owere I, conveyed her warm New Year greetings from Emeabiam, affectionately referred to as her “small London.”

She noted that Emeabiam is home to over 2,000 hectares of rubber estate, which, although currently neglected, holds great promise.

“Our land remains verdant, tranquil, and unpolluted, blessed with fresh air and natural beauty—ideally suited for eco-tourism and sustainable development.

“As we embark upon the new year, may it bring renewed hope, purposeful engagement, and opportunities to unlock the vast potential of our communities.”
