Tinubu Appoints Egwim CMD, FUTHO

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday March 24, 2026 approved the appointment of Dr. Jideuma Ikenna Egwim as the substantive Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH),former (FMC) Owerri, Imo State.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, marks a significant milestone for the hospital and underscores the administration’s commitment to placing experienced professionals at the helm of critical public health institutions.

Dr Egwim who hails from Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli LGA, Imo State, brings a robust pedigree as a seasoned family health physician with over 26 years of hands-on experience in the medical field.

His deep-rooted connection to the region positions him uniquely to address local health challenges while elevating the hospital’s standard and status.

He previously served as Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Imo State branch, from 2006 to 2008.

During this period, he championed initiatives that strengthened medical advocacy, improved practitioner welfare, and enhanced service delivery.

His leadership earned him respect among peers and stakeholders, proving his ability to navigate complex healthcare landscapes with vision and resolve.

Dr Egwim is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria since 2008 and recipient of the Provost Award of the 1999 Graduating Class of the University of Ibadan Medical School. 
He obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical Research from the University of Liverpool and PhD in Public Health/Epidemiology from Walden University USA, in addition to training in Palliative Care from Hospice Africa, Uganda and the Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. 

He is a seasoned administrator, and has held several leadership positions in the Hospital including Head, Department of Family Medicine. Head, NHIA Unit and pioneer Head, Palliative Care Unit.

Beyond the Federal University Teaching Hospital Owerri, he has served various times as Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association and the Society of Family Physicians Imo State as well as,Faculty Board Member of the Faculty of Family Medicine in the National Postgraduate Medical College.

As duty calls again,Dr Egwim is poised to leverage his tremendous wealth of experience to drive transformative change at FUTH Owerri. The hospital faces ongoing demands for upgraded infrastructure, specialized care, and efficient management amid Nigeria’s evolving health sector. Observers anticipate that his expertise in family health will prioritize patient-centered reforms, staff motivation, and innovative partnerships.
