OYC Boss Urges FG, Imo Govt To Reconstruct Naze-Nekede-Ihiagwa-Obinze Road
The Federal and Imo State governments have been urged to undertake the reconstruction of the Naze-Nekede-Ihiagwa-Obinze Road, which serves as a vital connection between three prominent federal institutions in Imo State.
Igboayaka O Igboayaka, President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), made this appeal during a press briefing held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, on Monday.
Igboayaka described the deteriorating condition of the road as a significant source of hardship and insecurity in the area.
He called upon the Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi, and the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, to assume immediate responsibility for the road’s repair.
“Although it is classified as a state road, it connects three major federal institutions: the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), the Police College, and the Federal Polytechnic Nekede. The Federal Ministry of Works, under Senator David Nweze Umahi, should intervene to demonstrate its capacity to alleviate the suffering of students,” stated Igboayaka.
He further emphasized that the road has endured years of neglect, abandonment, and severe deterioration, leading to vehicle damage, prolonged travel times, and significant hardship for students, staff, and local residents.
The OYC leader also claimed that prior reconstruction efforts initiated by the Imo State Government from the Naze-Nekede axis were left incomplete.
Additionally, Igboayaka expressed concerns regarding escalating insecurity, noting that the poor condition of the road has turned it into a hotspot for kidnapping, car theft, and motorcycle theft.
He called for a collaborative response from both the federal and state governments and recommended the expansion of drainage systems toward Ihiagwa Market, as well as the construction of a bridge to facilitate movement and provide an alternative route.
He concluded by stating, “Commuters consistently express frustration over delays and the challenging terrain. We require a swift and permanent resolution to this road issue before it transforms into a death trap.”
