OTDU Opposes Donation Of Imo Poly Land To Catholic Church

The Orlu Town Development Union (OTDU) has declined the request from the Catholic Diocese of Orlu for the land previously occupied by the Imo State Polytechnic Orlu Campus to be transferred to the Diocese.

This decision was conveyed in a communiqué released following a general meeting of the union on October 20, 2025.

The meeting, which took place at the Orlu Community Civic Centre, was attended by a delegation of bishops from the Orlu Catholic Diocese.

The union denounced the covert transfer of the land to the Catholic Church and expressed appreciation for the community members who took legal action to reclaim the land.

It issued a warning to those responsible for orchestrating the secret transfer to cease such activities immediately.

The communiqué, signed by Chief Marcel Okereke, Acting President, and Pastor Okwukweka Uwandu, Publicity Secretary, stated that the OTDU would ensure that the Orlu Community is no longer disadvantaged in the allocation of development projects.

While acknowledging that the Orlu Community is not in conflict with the Catholic Church, it urged the Church to recognize the community’s previous acts of generosity.

The communiqué expressed regret that lands previously donated by the community to the Church have been converted to commercial use, contrary to the original intentions of the donors.

The community expressed concern over the perceived absence of ‘government presence’ and called upon the government to extend the benefits of democracy to the community.
