Imo Family Fights Over Deceased Member’s Body
A dispute has arisen within a family in Amauburu Ubomiri Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State concerning the remains of Pa Donatus Amuchienwa, an 82-year-old deceased family member.
Reports indicate that the conflict has led to the unauthorized exhumation and relocation of his corpse to an undisclosed location.
The remains of Pa Amuchienwa were laid to rest on October 17, 2025, following a five-month period in the mortuary.
He was reported to have succumbed to kidney-related ailments.
Human rights activist and broadcaster Chinonso Uba, widely recognized as Nonsonkwa, noted that no family member requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death until after the burial had taken place.
Nonsonkwa, whose non-governmental organization has intervened in the matter, revealed that it was only post-interment that a faction within the family obtained a court order to halt the burial proceedings.
This faction reportedly includes the deceased’s estranged wife, who separated from him 32 years prior, along with other individuals whom the deceased had instructed to maintain distance following his death.
On December 23, 2025, Nonsonkwa further disclosed that the estranged wife, in collaboration with other family members from her faction, forcibly exhumed the body with the assistance of local vigilante personnel.
The activist stated in a social media video that only the faction responsible for exhuming the corpse is aware of its current location.
