Court Remands Woman In Prison For Burning Private Parts Of Maid
A Magistrate Court in Owerri, Imo State, on Thursday, December 18, ordered the remand of a 38-year-old woman, Juliet Igwe, at the Owerri Correctional Centre for the alleged burning of the private parts of her maid.
Presiding Magistrate, His Worship B. U. Adikibe, issued the order but concurred with the defense counsel that the court lacks jurisdiction to try the matter. His Worship further instructed the transfer of the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for further advice.
Juliet Igwe was arraigned for reportedly using a candle to inflict harm on the private parts of her five-year-old maid, Onyinyechi. She also allegedly used hot water to scald the girl’s hands and body.
Medical reports from the doctor treating the girl indicated that two of Onyinyechi’s fingers on her right hand would require amputation to prevent the infection from spreading to other fingers.
As she was escorted towards the Black Maria to be transported to prison, a stoic Juliet Igwe burst into tears. Amidst sobs, she expressed regret over the severity of the injuries she inflicted on the young girl.
It is noteworthy that Juliet Igwe, who has three biological daughters, was apprehended following intelligence received by the Ideato North Police Divisional Headquarters.
The state police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police DSP Henry Okoye, revealed this information during the suspect’s parade in Owerri.
He commended the Stand for Humanity Foundation and its founder, Chidiebube Ijeoma, for their intervention in the matter.
The foundation has taken responsibility for the minor’s medical expenses and welfare needs.
