Amuneke Praises Rising Standard Of African Football

Emmanuel Amuneke, the 1994 African Footballer of the Year, has commended the continuous enhancement of football quality across the African continent.

Amuneke also praised the competitive and thrilling nature of the 2025 African Cup of Nations tournament, which was won by Senegal.

He remarked that while the 2023 edition, hosted by Ivory Coast, established a solid benchmark, the 2025 edition held in Morocco showcased the continent’s advancing football maturity.

Amuneke made these remarks in Owerri, Imo State, shortly after the Association of Ex-Footballers and Friends (ASEF) organized a birthday celebration for him at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

He stated, “The standard continues to improve. African players are rapidly developing and aspire to compete at the highest levels seen in Europe. It is gratifying that our players can now skillfully compete at the top.”

He also expressed optimism about the future of the tournament, predicting that the 2027 AFCON, to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, would be exceptional.

Amuneke conveyed his sincere gratitude to ASEF, its leadership, and members for the honor, describing the celebration as a rare demonstration of love and humanity.

“My birthday was on December 25, but I traveled to Spain around that period, which influenced ASEF’s decision to hold the celebration today,” he explained.

“What began as a casual discussion eventually materialized. It was unplanned, but the love and honor shown to me mean everything.”

He further expressed his deep appreciation for the people of Imo State and Nigerians in general, acknowledging the numerous well-wishers who had continued to call and send messages of support.

The President of ASEF, Okereke Ikechukwu, described Amuneke as a true legend, leader, and source of inspiration.

According to Ikechukwu, Amuneke’s commitment to football development and passion for excellence have positively impacted lives across generations.

“We wish you a long life, good health, and prosperity in all your endeavors,” concluded the ASEF president.
