Flood Claims One Life, Submerges Over 20 Houses In Abia Community

At least one fatality has been reported, along with the submersion of more than 20 houses, due to flooding following heavy rainfall on Tuesday in the Ugwueke Ancient Kingdom, located in the Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.

The deceased, identified only as Ejiuwa, was reportedly swept away by the swift floodwaters at his residence in Ndielu Community. A search party subsequently located his body along the bank of a flooded area the following day.

Reports indicate that no fewer than 20 houses in Ndielu Community were submerged, with portions of their walls collapsing under the pressure of the water.

The neighboring Amaeze Community also suffered significant damage, as houses were washed away and economic trees uprooted.

Chijioke Chukwu, the councillor representing the the Ugwueke/Ezeukwu Ward and Deputy Majority Leader in the Bende Legislative Council, confirmed these developments.

Chukwu acknowledged that this is the first instance of flooding of such magnitude affecting the community.

He described this period as a challenging moment for his constituents while expressing optimism that the situation can be improved.

“It is a difficult time for my community. We will prevail,” he stated.

The councillor extended his sincere condolences to the family who lost a member due to the flood, as well as to those whose investments were destroyed.

“My thoughts are with the family of the individual we lost to the flood, which has taken away investments, homes, and peace of mind.

“In God we trust! There is still hope,” he concluded..

Reports indicate that the Amaeze Bridge, the sole access point into the Ugwueke Ancient Kingdom, is experiencing gradual erosion due to flooding.

Residents have urged that remedial work be undertaken on the bridge to avert a potential collapse.
