Group Urges Imo Govt To Rescue Visually-impaired Witchcraft Suspects

Dr. Leo Igwe, Director of the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AFAW), has implored the Imo State Government and other pertinent agencies to assist Mr. Joseph Otti from Awa Autonomous Community, located in the Oguta Local Government Area.

Mr. Otti’s residence was reportedly demolished by his brother, Mr. Hilary Otti, following accusations of witchcraft.

During a press briefing in Owerri, Dr. Igwe expressed regret that police involvement in the situation resulted in further victimization of the accused.

He emphasized the necessity for the State Government and Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victim.

Mr. Joseph Otti recounted that the incident took place on December 25, 2025.

He claimed that his personal belongings and agricultural crops were destroyed by individuals allegedly hired by Mr. Hilary Otti, who accused him and his wife, Mrs. Oby Otti, of engaging in witchcraft.

Visually-impaired, Mr. Joseph Otti reported that the attack rendered his family homeless, with his eight children being assaulted and his wife detained at the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, commonly known as Tiger Base Owerri, for five days.

He revealed that his family is currently residing with a friend in Owerri and lamented that the community’s Traditional Ruler, HRH Eze Ihezie Felix Ononuju, has declined to intervene in the matter.

Mr. Otti appealed to Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma and the Imo State Government for assistance, expressing concern over his inability to reconstruct his home.
