2027: ADC Should Field Obi With Atiku As Running Mate-OYC

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has called upon former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to consider the role of running mate to Mr. Peter Obi on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform to enhance their chances of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

The National President of OYC, Igboayaka O Igboayaka, gave the advice in a statement delivered to the press in Abuja on Monday, December 1, 2025.

Igboayaka emphasized the established political convention whereby the presidency alternates between Southern and Northern Nigeria.

He further elaborated, “The National Chairman of ADC hails from the Northern region, hence the Presidential Candidate should originate from the Southern region. Following the conclusion of Northern Nigeria’s eight-year tenure in 2023, a Southern Nigerian President assumed office for the 2023 and 2027 terms.”

He stated that Southern Nigeria is anticipated to fulfill its tenure by 2031, necessitating that ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election be selected from Southern Nigeria.

According to Igboayaka, the rotational presidency between Southern and Northern Nigeria positions Mr. Peter Obi as the most capable and trustworthy candidate from Southern Nigeria to succeed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

He added, “It would be a misguided political strategy and an intentional political misstep for ADC to nominate a Northern candidate for the 2027 presidential election, as an alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.”

Igboayaka expressed that the Tinubu administration has not fulfilled its promises and should be replaced, but may garner sympathetic votes if ADC nominates a Northern presidential candidate.

He concluded by suggesting that nominating Atiku as the presidential candidate with Obi as his running mate may inadvertently facilitate Tinubu’s victory in 2027.
