Xenophobic Attacks: Uzodimma Allocates N300m To Indigenes Escaping South Africa
The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has sanctioned the disbursement of N300 million to support Imo state residents who are studying at the law school and those fleeing South Africa due to xenophobic attacks.
A total of 250 returnees will receive one million Naira each to facilitate their rehabilitation and reintegration, while 100 Imo students enrolled in the Nigeria Law School will be granted N500,000 each. This financial aid is intended to assist them in coping with the increasing cost of living.
This announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Honorable Declan Emelumba, in a statement issued in Owerri.
He explained that the governor was compelled to undertake these humanitarian actions due to the challenging circumstances faced by the beneficiaries.
“The law students made a heartfelt appeal to His Excellency for support to mitigate the effects of global inflation on the cost of living. As a compassionate leader, he responded promptly,” he elaborated.
The Commissioner further clarified that the assistance provided to the South African returnees was motivated by the governor’s empathy, as he recognized the need for aid among the traumatized residents. Consequently, he authorized what he described as a “reintegration fund” for them.
Emelumba stated that the governor was convinced that the residents forced to leave South Africa required support to settle down and reintegrate into society with minimal discomfort.
He emphasized that under the shared prosperity agenda of Uzodimma’s administration, every citizen is cared for, extending beyond infrastructural advancements in the state.
Regarding the law students, Emelumba noted that this is not the first instance of the governor offering assistance.
He remarked, “Many of them are included in the state government’s scholarship program, and periodically, the governor extends a helping hand to them.”
