RULAAC seeks release of nursing trainee from police gulag

A human rights organization, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre(RULAAC) has urged the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma to intervene in the arrest and detention of a nursing trainee in police custody.
It was gathered that 21-years-old Miss Nmesoma Chukwunyere, a nursing trainee at Mother of Mercy Hospital and Maternity Orlu was arrested by the police from Orlu Division on July 15, 2025 while she was carrying out part-time work at Evergreen Pharmacy Umudiato Orlu.
Her arrest followed a robbery incident that occurred at the residence of the pharmacy owner, one Mr Declan on June 22, 2025.
According to RULAAC, Nmesoma was visited with torture in police custody until she made a statement under duress.
The rights group, in a statement signed by Okechukwu Nwanguma, quoted her father Gabriel Ekechukwu as saying that nothing incriminating was found at Nmesoma’s residence and her bank account as no suspicious transactions were found in it.
Interestingly, former workers at the pharmacy also reportedly absolved Nmesoma of complicity in the robbery.
RULAAC disclosed that in spite of this development, the police transferred the nursing trainee from its custody in Orlu to its gulag at Tiger Base Owerri and have held her in captivity for about three months now.
The rights organization appealed to the CP to use his good offices to release the nursing trainee from detention.
It noted that the police have not deemed it necessary to charge Nmesoma to court because there is no evidence roping her in.
RULAAC also urged the CP to investigate the conducts of the Investigating Police Officers namely Osinachi at Orlu Division and Inspector Chidi Igwe at Tiger Base Owerri in respect of the torture and coercion of Nmesoma to change her statement.
It equally called on the CP to ensure the pharmacy proprietor, Mr. Declan was not allowed to pervert justice and that justice is seen to have been served in the matter.
