Melaye Faults Tinubu For Granting Pardon To 70 Drugs Barons
Former Senator Dino Melaye has expressed disapproval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to pardon 70 convicted drug barons, stating that it undermines the nation’s efforts to combat narcotics.
In a social media post, Melaye suggested that the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) be disbanded, arguing that the president’s action nullifies the agency’s efforts since its establishment.
Melaye further claimed that his research indicates no other global leader has exercised mercy on drug traffickers in such a manner.
The statement reads, ‘Pardon granted 70 drug lords by President Tinubu is unprecedented in history. Checks have revealed that it has never happened in the history of the world.
“My advice to President Tinubu is to scrap the NDLEA. His action has made a beautiful nonsensical of the efforts of the agency since inception.’
It is worth noting that the National Council of States meeting on October 9, 2025, approved President Tinubu’s request for clemency for 175 inmates to reduce congestion in correctional facilities nationwide.
According to Gov Uba Sani of Kaduna State, 82 inmates received pardons, 65 had their sentences reduced, and seven death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.
