Imo Postpones Local Government Elections
The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has officially announced the postponement of the chairmanship and councillorship elections within the state.
This announcement was made in a statement signed by Charles Ejiogu, the chairman of the commission.
The elections were initially scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, across the 27 council areas and 305 wards in the state.
Ejiogu expressed regret for any inconveniences that the postponement may have caused to stakeholders.
He further indicated that consultations are currently underway with stakeholders, particularly the Inter Party Advisory Council, to determine a suitable date for the rescheduling of the elections.
The indefinite postponement follows an amendment to the law governing council administration in the state, enacted by the state legislature.
The legislature, under the leadership of Speaker Chike Olemgbe, amended the law on Tuesday to grant Governor Hope Uzodimma the authority to appoint Interim Management Committees (IMCs) to oversee the council areas.
Since assuming office in January 2020, Governor Uzodimma has appointed Interim Management Committees and sole administrators to manage the council areas.
In 2024, elections were held to elect the current chairpersons and councillors, whose terms are set to conclude on September 30, 2026.
