DIG Charges Officers To Adopt Due Process In Discharging Police Duty

Police personnel have been tasked with ensuring adherence to due process in the arrest, investigation, and detention of citizens.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Margaret Ochalla issued this directive during an unexpected visit to the Imo State Police Command.

Ochalla stressed the importance of strict compliance with the rule of law and the fundamental rights of citizens, which she declared are non-negotiable.

The visit aligns with the vision of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwanu DISU for a professional, humane, accountable, and effective Police Force.

Its purpose was to reinforce adherence to the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ fundamental human rights in the execution of policing duties, while enhancing operational efficiency in combating kidnapping and other violent crimes.

During the visit, the Deputy Inspector General conducted a thorough inspection of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Owerri, as well as other critical operational facilities within the Command.

She also examined the detention facilities, engaging with some suspects in custody and reviewing their cases to ensure that no suspect is held unlawfully or beyond constitutionally prescribed limits.

The Commissioner of Police for the Imo State Command, Audu Garba Bosso, while briefing the Deputy Inspector General, emphasized the Command’s ongoing operational efforts in combating violent crime and maintaining discipline within the ranks.

He reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for extortion, corruption, and human rights violations, noting that seven personnel were recently dismissed for misconduct related to violations of citizens’ rights, in accordance with existing disciplinary procedures.
