Anyanwu Urges NUC To Revoke Medical, Law Certificates From Nigerian Universities
Mr. Donald Anyanwu, a political scientist and journalist, has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to revoke all undergraduate medical and law degree certificates obtained from Nigerian universities from 1988 to the present.
Anyanwu contended that the national educational curriculum, known as 6-3-3-4, along with subsequent programs, has not included undergraduate programs in Medicine and Law. In an interview with National Newsbreak in Owerri on Tuesday, he maintained that there are currently no law or medical courses offered at Nigerian universities.
He asserted that the institutions provide courses in other professional fields. For example, at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, he noted that the legal system, constitution, and international laws are categorized under political science, while the philosophy department offers courses in jurisprudence, ethics, and logic, and the development sociology department includes criminology.
He questioned which of these constitutes a law faculty course, emphasizing that law should be pursued as a graduate program following the completion of a first degree.
According to him, this situation contributes to instances of judicial officers committing miscarriages of justice, citing the unlawful detention of his wife by a Magistrate as a case in point to support his argument.
Mr. Anyanwu announced his intention to visit the NUC headquarters next week to formally submit his petition regarding the matter at hand.
He asserted that individuals currently presenting themselves as medical and legal practitioners have caused significant harm to the nation.
He further stated that this situation is a primary driver of the increasing trend of medical tourism.
