Imo CPC Commemorates World Consumer Rights Day

The Imo State Consumer Protection Council (CPC) extends an invitation to the public to participate in this year’s World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) celebration, which is scheduled to take place in Owerri.

In an official statement released by the Director General of the Council, Mrs. Obioma Okafor, the event is set for Monday, March 16, 2026, and will be held at the Imo CPC Auditorium, Area B, New Owerri, adjacent to ISOPADEC.

The Director General emphasized that this annual event is organized with the aim of promoting consumer awareness and educating the public about their rights and responsibilities within the marketplace.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” focusing on ensuring that goods and services provided to the public adhere to approved safety standards while empowering consumers with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions.

Mrs. Okafor highlighted that the program will convene stakeholders, regulatory agencies, business operators, and consumers to engage in discussions on key issues affecting consumer protection and product safety within the state.

She further disclosed that the celebration will feature a variety of engaging activities, including goodwill messages from stakeholders, inter-school competitions designed to promote consumer education among students, and product exhibitions by manufacturers and service providers. These activities are intended to enhance the public’s understanding of consumer rights and encourage businesses to uphold high standards of product safety and quality.

A keynote presentation by Mrs. Uchenna Enyioko, Technological Controller at Nigerian Breweries Plc, will serve as the highlight of the event, with her serving as the Guest Speaker.

The Director General reiterated the Council’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of consumers in Imo State and ensuring that only safe and quality products are available in the market.

She, therefore, urged members of the public, consumer groups, traders, manufacturers, students, and other stakeholders to attend the event and collaborate with the Council in promoting consumer rights and responsible business practices in the state.

World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated globally each year to raise awareness about consumer rights and to encourage actions that protect consumers from unfair trade practices and unsafe products.
