Fire Guts Catholic Cathedral In Taraba

By Godwin Agia, Taraba

An inferno has devastated the St. Mary Catholic Church’s Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State, reducing the multi-million naira edifice to ashes.

Fr. John Laikei, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Wukari, conveyed to our Correspondent via telephone that the fire erupted on Wednesday night, shortly after the restoration of power in the vicinity.

He stated that the St. Mary Catholic Cathedral, a significant landmark in Wukari, was entirely destroyed; however, he confirmed that there were no casualties.

Fr. Laikei characterized the incident as a “total setback” for the diocese, expressing that they remain in a state of shock.

“It was a scene of complete devastation, with flames engulfing everything. No roofs or furniture remain intact here.”

“The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but I can confirm that it coincided with the restoration of power. I must also inform you that the authorities have yet to evaluate the damage,” he remarked.

He further lamented the absence of functional fire service vehicles, a persistent issue in Wukari, and urged for immediate attention.

This incident occurred just a few months after the Wukari local government secretariat was entirely consumed by a similar inferno.
