Abia Student Dies During Inter House Sports Rehearsal

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, February 18, when a female student of Ugwueke Secondary School in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State collapsed and passed away during the school’s Inter-House Sports activities.

Miss Mary Orji Chukwu, an indigene of Amaokai Autonomous Community, was participating in a rehearsal for the school’s upcoming Inter-House Sports competition when the unfortunate event transpired.

According to our correspondent, she was immediately transported to a nearby medical facility, where she subsequently passed away.

Comrade Samuel Anyim, President General of Ugwueke Youths for Development (UYD), confirmed the student’s passing in a statement released on Thursday.

The statement, which was shared on the Ugwueke Youths for Development WhatsApp platform, reads as follows:

“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of the late Mary Orji Chukwu from Amaokai.

“Her untimely death occurred yesterday at Ugwueke Secondary School while she was participating in the school’s inter-house sports activities. This heartbreaking incident has left her family, friends, classmates, and the entire community in shock and mourning.

“Mary was a vibrant young soul, full of life and promise. Her sudden departure is a painful loss not only to her immediate family but to everyone who knew and loved her.

“In this difficult moment, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and pray that God grants them the strength, comfort, and grace to bear this irreparable loss.

“May He console her friends and the entire school community during this time of grief. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

Our correspondent further reported that the deceased had an underlying medical condition and would not have participated in the rehearsal had she heeded the warning from her teachers advising students with any ailments not to take part in the activity.
