Ehime Mbano Council Leader Escapes Death

Tragedy was averted on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, when a commuter bus conveying the Leader of Ehime Mbano Legislative Council, Hon. Ifeanyi Onyekachi, veered off the Owerri-Umuahia Expressway before somersaulting several times.

National Newsbreak gathered that the bus driver was avoiding smashing a commercial motorcyclist who suddenly screeched to a halt in front of his vehicle, as well as colliding with another vehicle.

Hon. Onyekachi explained that on swerving to avoid hitting the motorcyclist, the commuter bus driver careered off the road to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle and ramming into an electric pole, leading to the somersault.

According to him, some passersby and personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, had a tough time cutting a part of the bus open to rescue himself and other passengers in the damaged bus.

Hon. Onyekachi further disclosed that one of the passengers passed out instantly but was later resuscitated at the hospital.

He attributed their survival to God’s mercy and the driver’s dexterity.

He stated, “My brother, I just escaped death in a ghastly motor accident. After we had our plenary yesterday (Tuesday, October 14) at the local government headquarters, I was returning to Owerri this morning, and around Mbaise, our vehicle veered off the road to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle.

“The driver, Emeka, managed to swerve, and the vehicle fell off. People around, and Road Safety officials on patrol, broke parts of the vehicle from where people were evacuated. I was told that the man who passed out has been resuscitated. Thank God. Please thank God for me. I just received treatment.”

Hon. Onyekachi, who is also a journalist, lost some personal belongings, which included identity cards and cash.
