Pressure Mounts On Striking Imo Varsity Lecturers To Resume Duties

Increasing pressure is being exerted on the striking lecturers at Imo State University in Owerri to return to work or face potential dismissal.

Currently, examinations are being conducted for students behind closed doors.

Several lecturers have expressed their intention not to evaluate any examinations administered under these conditions.

Information filtering indicates that the government is utilizing Vice Chancellor Prof. Uchefula Chukwumaeze to disrupt the unity among the lecturers.

Reports suggest that the lecturers have divided into two factions: one faction remains resolute in continuing the strike, while the government-affiliated faction is covertly facilitating the administration of examinations.

The lecturers’ union at the university initiated a strike action this month following the government’s failure to implement the agreement reached in 2025 regarding improved working conditions at the institution.

Recently, two executives of the union were briefly arrested and detained in an effort by the authorities to undermine the solidarity among the lecturers.
