Kidnapped NYSC Members Not Rescued, Says Nonsonkwa

Popular broadcaster Theodore Chinonso Ubah has refuted report that the 20 kidnapped prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were rescued by security agents.

Ubah popularly known by the moniker Nonsonkwa stated that the corps members were actually released by their captors after payment of ransom.

His stance tallies with the position of the family of one of affected fresh graduates that it paid N6 million before its son was let off the hook.

Nonsonkwa insisted that the corps members walked out of the den of their kidnappers on their own without being accompanied by security agents.

According to him, it was after walking into freedom from the hideout of their captors that security agents arrived to meet with them.

Nonsonkwa pointedly accused the authorities of lying to the people about the release on the abductees.

The Imo State Government and the state police command which claimed that the abductees were rescued said they were not privy to the payment of ransom by families of the affected fresh graduates.

The broadcaster in a viral video regretted that nothing was done to the kidnappers, leaving them to continue to roam and continue in their dastardly enterprise.

According to Nonsonkwa, the family of the female plantain seller who was kidnapped by the same abductors alongside the corps members paid N500,000 ransom to secure her release.

Nonsonkwa warned against what he termed the modus operandi of security agents in this part of the country which is arresting some Igbo youths soon and branding them the captors of the 20 corps members.

He insisted that the kidnappers of the fresh graduates were Fulanis going by their accent.

Twenty prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were travelling from Oyo State on October 1 to Akwa Ibom and Abia States when they were intercepted by kidnappers at the Umunoha section of Owerri Onitsha Expressway in Imo State and taken hostage.

They were held for seven days in the thick forest of Amakohia Ubi Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
