Court grants Imo lawyer, Chinedu Agu bail

The Federal High Court in Owerri, Imo State, on Thursday, September 25, 2025 granted bail to a lawyer and activist, Chinedu Agu.

The bail came few hours after a Chief Magistrate ordered Agu’s remand in prison custody.

Chief Magistrate Obinna Njemanze on Thursday declined jurisdiction to try the accused but ordered his remand at the Owerri Correctional Centre.

Agu was arraigned by the police for alleged cyberstalking, defamation of character, inciting disturbance and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

But while Agu was being arraigned at the Owerri Magistrate Court, some senior lawyers approached a Federal High Court in Owerri, and filed an application for his bail.

The lawyers led by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Stanley Imo, filed the application for Agu’s bail on the grounds of “a matter of urgency.”

The application for Agu’s bail was granted by the court.

While Agu was remanded in Owerri Correctional facility, his colleagues were perfecting the Federal High Court’s release order.

Speaking with newsmen Barr Imo confirmed that his application for Agu’s release was granted by the Federal High Court in Owerri.

He said” Yes. I did the matter in the morning at the Federal High Court in Owerri and left. The application was granted and I left the court. Some lawyers were perfecting the court processes when I left.

A professor of law and former chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu confirmed the development.

Odinkalu said that the court order for Agu’s release was awaiting execution to ensure Agu’s production and release.

Odinkalu wrote “The Federal High Court in Owerri has granted an order admitting lawyer, Chinedu Agu to bail.

“The application, filed by a legal team led by Stanley Imo, SAN, was taken and granted today as a matter of urgency.

“The warrant is awaiting execution to ensure his production and release.”
