Abacha Died On Top Of An Igbo Girlfriend’s Sister -Ex-DSS Director

Dennis Amachree, a former assistant director of the Department of State Services (DSS), has recounted his perspective on the final moments of Sani Abacha, the former head of state of Nigeria.

Abacha served as Nigeria’s military ruler from November 1993 until June 1998. His death has been surrounded by controversy and numerous conspiracy theories, with persistent allegations of human rights abuses and an authoritarian regime characterizing the Abacha era.

According to The Nation, Amachree detailed Abacha’s last moments in his new publication titled “DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield.”

At the time of Abacha’s passing, Amachree held the position of assistant director of operations and intelligence at the Lagos DSS command.

He stated that the late military leader died in the presence of a woman during an intimate encounter at approximately 4:05 AM at the presidential villa in Abuja.

Following the incident, the woman reportedly fled the scene and immediately boarded a flight to Lagos.

Amachree noted that the woman, along with her older sister—who was Abacha’s girlfriend—arrived at Aso Rock, the nation’s seat of power, on the day of the incident.

He explained that Abacha’s girlfriend left her younger sister at the villa with the general.

“At approximately 2:40 AM, shortly after General Useni departed, Abacha’s girlfriend, an Igbo woman (name withheld), arrived at the Aso Rock Guest House from the Nicon Noga Hilton Hotel,” excerpts from the book indicate. “Accompanying her was her younger sister, a pharmacist attending a conference in Abuja.

The Head of State had recently gifted his girlfriend a new SUV, and they decided to visit ‘Oga’.”

“Abacha was captivated by the younger sister, and after a brief period, the girlfriend returned to the hotel, leaving the pharmacist alone with the Head of State.

At around 4:05 AM, as they were becoming intimate, the pharmacist noticed that Abacha had ceased moving.

She called out to him, but he did not respond and appeared stiff. Upon checking his pulse, she found none.”

“In a state of panic, she quickly dressed and exited the guest house, informing the soldier on duty that ‘Oga’ had requested a vehicle to take her back to her hotel.

The soldier, unaware of the severity of the situation, promptly arranged for her transportation.

She returned to the Hilton, and after explaining the incident to her sister, she was swiftly driven to Abuja Airport to catch the 7:00 AM Okada Airline flight to Lagos.”

“This is the critical moment that Major Al-Mustapha missed. When he was finally alerted to Abacha’s condition at 5:00 AM, he inquired about who had been with the General. He was informed about the girlfriend’s younger sister, who had just been taken to the Hilton.”

“The State Security Service (SSS) was immediately notified and proceeded to the Hilton to apprehend the girlfriend; however, the pharmacist they urgently sought was already en route to Lagos.”

Amachree stated that he later interrogated the woman in Ogudu, Lagos, following a directive from the director of operations at the DSS national headquarters.

During the interrogation, the retired DSS assistant director recalled that the pharmacist’s initial statement was: “I did not kill him; he died on top of me.”

He remarked that her account contradicted the “conspiracy theories and half-truth
