ASUU IMSU Announces Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri chapter, has officially declared a total and indefinite strike action commencing on Monday, August 10.

The union attributes this decision to the Imo State Government’s failure to implement the 2025 FG-ASUU agreement concerning improved working conditions.

In a statement signed by Chairperson Stephen Oguji and Secretary Lazarus Chikwendu, the union highlighted the numerous efforts made to compel the state government to fulfill the agreement, all of which have been unsuccessful.

The union expressed disappointment regarding the Imo State Government’s refusal to implement the agreement, particularly in the light of the fact that other states, including Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, and Sokoto, have initiated implementation within their respective universities.

Furthermore, the union criticized the continued retention of IMSU under the Treasury Single Account (TSA) of the state government, which it views as a significant infringement on university autonomy.

It stated that this situation has resulted in the non-payment of promotion arrears since 2016 and delayed salaries for many of its members.

The union firmly stated that its members will not resume work until the agreement is duly implemented.
