Unpacking Amuneke’s Responsibilities At Heartland FC

The transition from a distinguished football player to a successful coach is not always seamless. This is particularly evident in the case of Emmanuel Amuneke, a former Nigerian international and the 1994 African Footballer of the Year.

During his playing days, Amuneke was renowned for his exceptional football prowess. Originating from Eziobodo, Imo State, he was part of the Super Eagles team that secured the 1994 African Cup of Nations and represented Nigeria in the World Cup that same year. Unfortunately, a knee injury precluded his participation in the 1998 World Cup.

Amuneke famously scored the decisive goal that led Nigeria to victory, clinching the gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. He also played for esteemed clubs such as Zamalek, Sporting CP, Barcelona, and Albacete.

At 56 years old, Amuneke did not merely transition into coaching; he pursued appropriate coaching courses to earn his certification.

However, his coaching career has not mirrored the success of his playing days. While serving as the coach of the Tanzanian national team, he managed to qualify them for the African Cup of Nations but resigned after losing all three group matches.

Amuneke’s most notable coaching achievement was leading Nigeria’s U-17 national team to victory at the World Cup in 2015. Despite efforts to promote him to head coach, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) did not endorse his elevation.

Amuneke was expected to restore his reputation upon his appointment as the head coach of Heartland FC of Owerri. It was hoped that leading the club to an elite league victory would silence the NFF critics who opposed his appointment.

Regrettably, the opposite transpired. Amuneke took charge of Heartland FC while it was competing in the elite Nigerian Professional Football League in 2024.

Instead of securing the league title or maintaining the club’s status, Amuneke led it to relegation to the less prestigious Nigerian National League (NNL).

Many extended him the benefit of the doubt, considering him a first-time offender who would exert every effort to return the club to the premier league.

However, the conclusion of his second season saw the Naze Millionaires unable to achieve promotion, marking the first time the club had experienced relegation without regaining promotion in the subsequent season.

The Imo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) attributes this challenge to the extensive responsibilities held by the former player.

Amuneke occupies the combined roles of Technical Manager, General Manager, and Chairman. The association has suggested a separation of these positions.

It would require a government either uninterested in football development or lacking knowledge of football administration to entrust one individual with such extensive responsibilities for managing its club.

Even if Amuneke were a prodigy, the overwhelming nature of his roles would undoubtedly impede his effectiveness. Therefore, we endorse the unbundling proposal put forth by SWAN.

Different hands are required to handle other aspects of the club’s administration while Amuneke concentrates on football matters. Should he reject this arrangement, it would be most appropriate to consider his departure from the club.

It is unfortunate that Heartland FC has deteriorated significantly under the current administration of Senator Hope Uzodimma and Coach Amuneke. The administration does not appear to prioritize sports, as evidenced by the poor state of sports facilities in the state, reflecting a lack of commitment to sports development and growth.
