Insecurity: Taraba Govt Orders Closure Of School Hostels

By Godwin Agia, Jalingo

The Taraba State Government has mandated the closure of all school hostels within the state, citing concerns over the prevailing insecurity issues in the country.

The directive, issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, applies to both public and private secondary schools in the state and takes effect immediately.

In a statement released on Saturday in Jalingo, it was indicated that the decision aims to ensure the safety of students, following recent abductions in other states, such as Kebbi and Niger.

“Due to the prevailing insecurity challenges in the country, it has been observed that boarding students, whether in public or private secondary schools, have become targets for bandits, as evidenced by the recent abductions in Kebbi and Niger States.

“In light of the current unhealthy situation in the country, His Excellency, the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has directed that all schools transition to day operations only, both in private and public secondary schools, effective immediately.

“In accordance with the above, I am instructed to inform all principals and proprietors of secondary schools to release all boarding students without further delay.

“This letter is copied to: The Executive Secretary, Taraba State Post Primary Schools Management Board, The Chairman of APSON, and NAPPS for information and necessary action,” the statement read.
