SWAN Congratulates Imo At 50, Highlights State’s Milestones In Sports

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State Chapter, has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Imo State Government and its citizens on the occasion of the state’s Golden Jubilee celebration.
In a statement issued by Chairman Cosmos Chukwuemeka and Secretary Tunde Liadi in Owerri, SWAN commended the government for the significant advancements in social, economic, and sports development achieved over the past 50 years.
The association urged the citizens to continue fostering partnerships to achieve further positive outcomes.
SWAN reminisced about the state’s achievements in sports since its inception in 1976, noting the impressive track records established by the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu.
The statement highlighted that the former Spartans FC of Owerri represented Nigeria in the 1988 pre-Olympic Games Football event in Seoul and performed commendably in the WAFU Cup Competition in the early 1980s, albeit falling short in the final.
Furthermore, the state has achieved remarkable success in various sports, including track and field, tennis, badminton, boxing, and handball. Imo Grasshoppers (female team) were celebrated in African handball, Eddy Ndukwu was the African Featherweight Boxing Champion, James Anukam was the National Tennis Champion, and Maria Onyenekwe was a National Marathon winner.
SWAN also highlighted the prestigious sporting events hosted by the state, such as the CISM/WALO military games, Malta Guinness Handball games, Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA), and the Olympic Games Training Camp.
Regarding sports development, SWAN expressed admiration for the refurbished Dan Anyiam Stadium, tennis courts, indoor sports hall, and other facilities, including floodlights.
