Disabled KOMU Student Appeals for Assistance

Shedrack Chinemerem Anokwuru, a 200-level Microbiology student at Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University (KOMU), Ogboko, has appealed to the Imo State Government for assistance after his business establishment was demolished by a government agency.

Anokwuru, a native of Avu Community in Owerri West Local Government Area, stated that his life has been devastated following the demolition of his Landlords Square Resort Avu by a group reportedly led by Chinasa Nwaneri, Special Assistant to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance.

According to Anokwuru, on September 18, 2025, one of his workers repeatedly called him while he was taking his second-semester examination, informing him that a bulldozer was demolishing his establishment. This news threw him off balance, leading him to leave the examination hall and rush back to Avu.

Upon arrival, Anokwuru found that his business house had been reduced to rubble, and the bulldozer and driver were nowhere to be found.

The student, with Matriculation Number 2024050879, listed the items he lost to include deep freezers, three big generating sets, furniture and fittings as well as beddings.

Anokwuru, whose right leg was paralyzed by polio at the age of six, disclosed that he can no longer provide for his children or himself, nor pay his school fees, since the source of his livelihood has been destroyed.

He stated, “I have three children, two daughters and a son, all in secondary school. I enrolled at KOMU to improve my education and standing in society. Now, my means of livelihood is gone. I couldn’t recover anything, not even a pin. I now live at the mercy of friends.”

Anokwuru emphasized that he dislikes begging for alms and prefers to work hard to provide for himself and his children. However, with the demolition of his establishment, his hope has been shattered.

He appealed to Governor Hope Uzodimma to assist him in rebuilding his business house and restocking it, stating that he cannot fight the government.

Anokwuru, 46, further disclosed that he was not given any prior notice nor was his establishment marked for removal before the demolition.
