Tragedy was averted on Friday, March 3 when a former Commissioner for Science and Technology in Imo State, Ikechukwu Umeh escaped death by a hair’s breadth at the hands of assassins.

It was gathered that the assassins who drove in a white Corolla car stormed a hotel in Owerri, the Imo state capital where Umeh was holding a meeting and fired at him but missed him.

The state Publicity Secretary of the party, Cajetan Duke confirmed the incident at the weekend.

Duke called on the security agencies in the state to investigate what it described as an organized attempt to intimidate and clamp down on leaders and officers of the APC in the state.

According to Duke, the assailants trailed the ex-commissioner to the venue of meeting in Owerri.

He said;”Earlier before this incident, we have alerted the public and the security agencies of continuous threat to members of the state working committee of our party by unknown persons.

“While we commit ourselves to issues-based and violent-free political process, we appeal to opposition political actors in the state to embrace politics of conversation instead of crude politics of violence, intimidation and harassment.

Umeh hails from Akokwa, hometown of the slain Sole Administrator of Ideato South LGA, Christopher Ohizu.

Both are said to be supporters of Governor Hope Uzodimma in Ideato nation.

Since the murder of the Sole Administrator, the leaders of the All Progressives Congress in the area have been sleeping with their eyes wide open.

When contacted, Umeh said the assailants aimed at either eliminating him or intimidating his party men and women ahead of the forthcoming state assembly elections.

He declined to speak further on the issue as security agencies are on top of the matter.
