The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday announced the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi as winner of the Saturday, February 25 poll held in Imo State.
According to the State Collation Officer and Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Charles Uchechukwu Esimole, Obi polled 352,904 votes to defeat the APC candidate, Ahmed Tinubu, who scored 66,171 votes.
Esimole further disclosed that APGA got 2,550 votes, NNPP 1,536 and PDP, 30044 votes.
He gave the number of registered voters as 2,125,446 and number of accredited voters as 476, 730.
Speaking shortly after, the Organizing Secretary of Imo APC, Ikechukwu Sunday Umeh, lauded the collation officer for the state, who he said really did a good job.
He said people should not be surprised about the agitation and accusing fingers being pointed at the APC of manipulating the results, because it is a ruling party.
According to Umeh, anytime a ruling party wins an election, there is always accusation while the people would applaud INEC for being transparent once the ruling party loses.
Umeh said;”Do they want us to stay without winning an election? We have a sitting governor, and if not any other thing, his own constituency, he must win. Let us understand this thing. His people voted in his place and people are still agitating.
“To me, the people in his constituency won election. That is why you mention Oru East, Oru West. The issue is that we are not afraid of that, it has been there overtime, that whenever a ruling party wins election people complain, but if the ruling party loses, people will shout to high heavens and say God has done it.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Officer for Njaba claimed that the poll result from the local government council was snatched by hoodlums.
.
Speaking on the incident, Imo State Commissioner of Police (CP) Muhammed Ahmed Barde said, having got the report from the Electoral Officer that her result was snatched, it was left for INEC to take decision on the area.
On whether the Electoral Officer who was arrested for giving incoherent report was still in detention or not, the CP said, “What I know is that I have three suspects, but I don’t know whether the Electoral Officer is among”.
