Trigger-happy dare-devils on Thursday opened fire on the convoy of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the Okigwe South Federal Constituency poll, Chike Okafor as he wrapped up his campaign.
The incident occurred at Abueke, close to the hometown of the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Jones Okeke.
It was gathered that the APC candidate’s Prado Jeep including backup vehicles were pockmarked by bullets.
A source close to the candidate told our correspondent that no member of his campaign team in the convoy was hit by the bullets of the assailants.
The source said; “Yes, Hon Chike Okafor escaped assassination. He was attacked at Abueke, a community close to the hometown of the PDP candidate, Jones Okeke.
“He and members of his campaign team were returning to home in Obowo LGA after wrapping up his campaign when the attack occurred”
Another source described as a miracle the fact that no member of the campaign team in the convoy was hit by bullets though the cars were riddled with bullets.
According to the source, the assassins missed the federal legislator because they didn’t know which vehicle in the convoy conveyed him.
Hear the source; “We are grateful to God for His mercies. More thankful that Okafor was not hit by any bullet. No member of the campaign team in the convoy was hit by bullets though the cars are riddled by bullets. This is simply a miracle”
The source counseled the politicians to desist from politicizing the escalating insecurity in the state.
He further admonished them to unite to address the situation, stressing that a situation in which every attack is blamed on Eastern Security Network, ESN, was not the best way of tackling the insecurity starring all in the face.
Okafor, a former Commissioner for Finance in Imo State is a two-time member representing Okigwe South Federal Constituency comprising Ehime Mbano/Ihitte/Uboma/Obowo Council Areas of Imo State in the House of Representatives.
He is seeking a third term.
