The Imo State Police Command has arrested the suspected killer of erstwhile preside aide, Ahmed Gulak, who was murdered on May 30, 2021 while being chauffeur-driven to the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport Owerri, Imo State.

Briefing newsmen in Owerri on Wednesday, the state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Ahmed Barde, said the suspect, Chinwendu Nwagwu, is an army deserter who hails from Amaohuru in Nguru, Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.

The CP who spoke through the Police Public Relations Officer, Michael Abattam, disclosed that the tactical team of the command stormed the community during the burial ceremony of the suspect’s father on December 23, 2022, and arrested him.

He further disclosed that the suspect popularly known as Onye-Army had been on the wanted list of the police.

He described him as an Operational Commander and Chief Trainer of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

According to the CP, “the suspect’s modus oparandi was to unleash surprise terror attacks on unsuspecting victims and go into hiding in the neighbouring states.

The CP said; “He was arrested after diligent gathering of both credible and technical intelligence, during the late father’s burial on 23rd of December, 2022.

“On sighting the police operatives, they took cover and engaged our men.on a gun duel, using the people present at the burial as a shield.

“Our gallant policemen retaliated professionally and tactically and later arrested the kingpin after a hot chase.”

He listed ammunition recovered from the suspect to include five pump action guns, two cut-to-size double barrel guns, four locally-made pistols, 50 rounds of live cartridges, nine locally-made hand-grenades, ESN regalia and various charms and rings.

In an interview, the suspect confessed training more than1000 terror gangs across the Southeast region and led many deadly attacks including the killing of Ahmed Gulak, burning of INEC offices, murder of innocent people, armed robbery and kidnapping.

He also confessed masterminding the murder of a Labour Party Assembly candidate and burning of his jeep.

He said; “My gang which include Okechukwu Duru and others, led the kidnap of Jude Nwahiri on 4th November 2021.

“We collected the sum of N21,000,000 as ramson after killing four persons in his residence at Umuohuru Nguru Aboh-Mbaise.

“I also led the killing of the Traditional Ruler of Amaohuru Nguru Aboh-Mbaise. His Royal Highness, Eze Anthony Anyanwu on the 10th of December, 2021.”

The suspect equally disclosed masterminding attacks on Ezinihitte Mbaise Police Station, Ahiazu Mbaise Police Station, Otoko Police Station Obowo, Ihitte-Uboma Police Station and Enyiogugu Police Station in Aboh-Mbaise.

He also claimed responsibility for the attack on Imo Correctional Center and state CIID Owerri on 5th April, 2021.

Another shocking revelation by the suspect was the disclosure of some notable people of the state sponsoring them to kill and terrorize the state.

He mentioned a popular traditional ruler in Mbaise and others from Aboh-Mbaise(names withheld) as their sponsors.
