Gunmen in the early hours of Monday, December 12 bombed the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, located on Owerri-Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, the Imo State capital.
But three of the gunmen were neutralized by a joint team of security agents, it was learnt.
Our correspondent further gathered that the fire bomb which the hoodlums threw at the building damaged part of the building.
The spokesman of the police in the state, CSP Mike Abbatam confirmed the incident.
Abattam revealed that three of the gunmen were killed and some firebombs recovered.
On December 4 ,2022, arsonists attacked the office of the electoral umpire in Orlu Local Government Area of the State.
They also attacked the INEC Office in Oru West Local Government Area of the state.
Reports say three of the attackers including their commander were killed by a joint security team during the attack at the headquarters in Owerri.
Abbatam further disclosed that three Ak47 rifles and vehicles were recovered from the attackers.
Our correspondent further learnt that sporadic shooting also rent the air Monday morning at the Relief Market area of Owerri.
A resident told National Newsbreak that the shooting was carried out by those who claimed to be enforcing the sit-at-home order of the factional Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
A faction of IPOB led by one Simon Ekpa said to be esconced in Finland had ordered a five-day lockdown which commenced on Friday, December 9.
The lockdown terminates on Tuesday, December 13.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in parts of Owerri after the incident.
On Friday, December, two policemen and a soldier including a supporter of the All Progressives Congress APC, and elder brother to Osita Iheme, Nollywood star popularly known as Pawpaw, Chidi Iheme were killed in parts of Imo State.
