The National Universities Commission (NUC) has ranked Imo State University, IMSU among 20 worst universities in the country.
The NUC in its 2021 ranking disclosed that the IMSU scored 25.97 points to place in this ignoble position.
It was gathered that the ranking does not necessarily mean the universities have the worst teaching methods or the worst lecturers but rather did not meet up with the required benchmarks as outlined by the NUC.
According to the NUC, this ranking was made from analysis of twelve indicators.
From the list, the worst university in Nigeria is the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi State.
Below is the top 20 list of worst universities in Nigeria according to NUC 2021 ranking.
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University -0.59 points; Igbinedion University – 4.05 points; Renaissance University – 8.92 points; Legacy University – 12.11 points; Al-Qalam University –13.62 points; Crescent University – 14.16 points; Federal University, Kashere – 17.22 points; Hallmark University – 17.61 points; Achievers University – 18.91 points and Enugu State University of Science & Tech – 21.00 points.
Others are Dominican University – 21.79 points; Bauchi State University –25.54 points; Kano University of Science & Technology – 25.67 points; Imo State University – 25.97 points; Gombe State University – 26.04 points; Kaduna State University – 28.00 points; Nasarawa State University – 28.33 points; Air Force Institute of Technology – 28.90 points; Kogi State University -30.32 points and Nigerian Army University, Biu -31.95 points
Meanwhile, the authorities of the Imo State University, Owerri say the institution finds it difficult to understand the criteria deployed by the NUC to arrive at its latest ranking.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Sir Ralph Obi-Njoku said though the NUC reserves the right to assess universities in the country, it was yet to explain the benchmarks it used in arriving at its latest ranking.
He said; “My response is that NUC reserves the right to assess Universities using what we call BMAS (Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards) to accredit programmes in the universities I do not know the yardstick for this assessment”.
