Minister of Science and Technology, Senator Mamora Olorunimbe has restated his stand on penile amputation as best punishment for rape.

Senator Olorunimbe spoke at the graduation ceremony of the 2022 Bemore Summer Boot Camp on Saturday in Akure, Ondo State.

The former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly expressed his confidence that penile amputation would help curtail what he termed ‘epidemic of rape in the country’.

He emphasized that cutting off the ‘instrument’ which men and boys deploy to rape ladies and girls would drastically reduce or eradicate incidences of rape in the society.

According to him, his friend who read and became furious over a story crediting him with suggesting penile amputation as panacea for rape ate the humble pie after seeing a photo of a devastated gang-raped girl he sent to him.

Olorunimbe said the friend thereafter told him rapists were deserving of supreme punishment instead of penile amputation.

Senator Olorunimbe lauded the initiator of Bemore Empowered Initiative and wife of the governor of Ondo State, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu for the great transformation that occur in the beneficiaries of Summer Boot Camp.

He noted that the world is currently in the Industrial revolution age when STEM-E (Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics-Entreprenuership) is key.

According to him, the country was still grappling with social and economic factors which put women and girl-child in a disadvantageous position.

He pointed out that there are still cultures which disallow women education thereby putting a ceiling to the advancement of the female gender.

The senator observed that what the Ondo State First Lady was doing is to light the candle and place it on the table for the females to find their way to personal development and advancement of the country.

He said the Bemore programme is capable of triggering similar programme for boys, describing it as ‘a conspiracy for inspiration’.

The minister also commended the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim who he described as a ‘strong pillar of support’ for Bemore Summer Boot Camp.
