Operatives of the Imo State Police Command on Sunday, August 28 nabbed two suspects said to be responsible for the vandalization of the Enugu Electric Distribution Company, (EEDC) cables in Ugiri Community, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state.
The vandalization of the cables is reported to be responsible for the constant power outages witnessed in the community and its environs in recent times
The spokesman of the police command, CSP Michael Abattam gave the names of the suspects as John Johnson, 24 years and Ekene Nwaojiji, 21 years.
The police spokesman said the duo are natives of Nde Achi Community in Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
According to Abattam, the police operatives, assisted by the community vigilance group effected the arrest of the duo upon receipt of report of constant vandalization of electric cables in the community and after gathering intelligence information as well as undertaking discreet investigation.
Abattam, in a statement, disclosed that the police operatives also recovered one locally made double barrel pistol, one locally made single barrel pistol, six rounds of live cartridges, vandalized high tension electric cables, one saw blade and one knife from the suspects.
He added that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are serial vandals who had been terrorising the community and vandalizing most of the high tension cables and transformers in the community.
According to him, the suspects have named their accomplices including those who buy the stolen cables from them.
He informed that efforts were on to round up the buyers of the stolen electric cables.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, CP, Mohammed Ahmed Barde has commended the police operatives who undertook the operation for a job well done.
Barde empathized with the people of Ugiri Community for the blackout they suffered at the hands of the suspects.
He however assured that the hoodlums would be made to face the music.
